The risk of explosions in filters, dryers and similar systems that involve dust is generally known.

European directives demand corresponding safety measures here:

The 1999/92/EC operating directive (ATEX 137/ATEX 118a) for the hazard analysis (explosion protection document) regulates basic safety requirements for the operator.

The 94/9/EC product directive (ATEX 100a) applies for system manufacturers in regards to devices, components and protection systems in explosion-prone areas.

Dust Explosion

We deliver individual explosion protection solutions for all types of industries and explosion risks:

HRD - Explosion Suppression

To reduce the negative impact of a dust explosion to the minimum, we implement HRD (high rate discharge) explosion suppression systems.

These systems are capable of detecting the onset of the pressure increase due to a dust explosion, and to smother the incipient explosion flame through the direct application of an extinguishing powder.

The most elegant solution:

Since an HRD system suppresses the incipient explosion shortly after ignition, destructive pressure levels are not reached in the first place.

An HRD explosion protection system consists of:
A pressure detector (1) which reliably monitors and evaluates the pressure within the system, reporting explosive pressure changes to the control unit (4).

The control unit processes the message within a few milliseconds, controls equipment and systems (2, 3) and supplies the ignition energy for the pyrotechnic opening of the valves on the extinguishing agent containers (5).

The HRD extinguishing agent containers are under high pressure and filled with various extinguishing agents depending on the application. In case of an explosion, the extinguishing agent is dispersed in the protection zone evenly and extremely rapidly via a special telescoping nozzle (6).

The entire process takes only one-twentieth of a second.

Explosion Decoupling

In order to prevent explosions from spreading to other system components, explosion decoupling measures have to be realised on the connecting lines of technical systems.

Mechanical non-return valves, explosion protection valves or rapid-action valves are used for this purpose. Extinguishing the explosion flame using a chemical extinguishing barrier is also commonly implemented.

HRD Extinguishing Barrier

In combination with an explosion protection system, an HRD extinguishing barrier reliably prevents the spread of an explosion to other system components. The extinguishing agent prevents the penetration of flames and the ignition or dispersion of accumulated dust deposits, thereby protecting against dangerous secondary explosions.

Non-Return Valves

Non-return valves are another reliable means to prevent the spread of explosions. They also protect the connected systems against explosion pressure which could destroy containers and pipework.

Therefore they can also be deployed in combination with pressure relief openings.

Rapid Acting Slide Valves

In case of an explosion, rapid-acting slide valves are triggered electrically from the control centre and close off the line within a few milliseconds. This reliably stops pressure and flames.

Explosion Protection Valve

Using an explosion protection valve for the pure gas side is commonly accepted as well. The line is reliably closed off in case of an explosion.

However, installation on the raw gas side is not allowable due to the geometry and the associated product deposits.

Explosion Pressure Relief

Explosion Pressure Relief Systems

Pressure relief systems are often installed for explosion protection, serving as the predetermined breaking point on the container and bursting open in case of an explosion before reaching the pressure resistance rating for the system being protected.

These burst discs are available in different versions and sizes, depending on the application.

When they are properly designed, pressure relief systems constitute reliable and economical explosion protection upgrades. However, they do require a safety zone where the pressure surge of the explosion cannot cause damage.

If the blast wave from the explosion cannot be routed to the outside through a short duct, the installation of explosion relief panels in interior rooms is therefore recommended. A flameless pressure relief system, in particular the implementation of an explosion suppression system, is recommended in these cases.
